Historic significance of Old Jammu City

Jammu City is also called as the city of temples. There are many temples in the city and the prominent ones are Raghunath temple (Denominations of every deity is present inside this temple), Bawe Temple (temple of deity Kali ), Ranbhireshwar Temple also known as Shivaley temple, Mahamaya Temple etc. Jammu city has its own historic significance and it has seen two dynasties rule here.

Some of the prominent places in Jammu city and their significance are enlisted below:

Purani Mandi : This is one of the oldest place where people started living. When Mubakar Mandi was constructed and was the new adobe of Dev dynasty, Purani Mandi was named like that. “Purani” means Old.

Srajen Di Dakki : Those who use to work in leather industry were called as “Saraj” and as most of the people who lived here were working in leather it was called as Saraje-di-Dakki. Most of them were practicing muslims. “Dakki” means an uphill walk.

Mohalla Daru Giran: It is said that this place is used to manufacture arms and armoury.

Kalith Nagar: People from Kalith town of tehsil Akhnoor migrated and were residing in this neighbourhood.

Pakka Danga: “Pakka” means solid and “Danga” means a raised platform. This is a place where a concrete raised platform was built and a beautiful Hindu temple of Deity Lakshmi was constructed. Today you will find this place predominantly used by books and stationery shops.

Kacchi Chavni: This was the cantonment area where a temporary army unit was stationed. Traces of which can be found in “Tange wali Gali” (Horse Cart Street)

Panjtirthi: “Panj” means five and “Tirth” means pilgrimage. Panjtirthi was named based on the fact that there were five religious places of different religions.

Dhonthali Bazaar & Dhonthali Dakki: Market from Panjtirthi to Chowk Chabutra is called as Donthali Bazaar. The uphill walk from Tawi river towards Panjtirthi is called as Donthali Dakki. This whole area is called as Donthali (Dharamsthali) based on its religious significance.

Moti Bazar: Moti Bazaar is a market named after the name of the King of Poonch, Moti SIngh.

Rani Temple and Rani Park: Rani temple and Rani Park is adjoining Moti Bazaar which is also named in respect of the queen of Poonch.

Kanak Mandi: “Kanak” means wheat and this is a place where trade of wheat use to happen. Today you won’t find anything related to wheat in this busy street.

Rajinder Bazaar: Rajinder Bazaar used to be Urdu Bazaar in those days. Famous singer Mallika Pukhraj use to live here after Maharaja Hari Singh appointed her as the court singer. Maharaja witnessed her impressive performance in his coronation ceremony and he appointed her as a court singer.

Residency Road: Residency road is named after the English Residents was hosted in this area. There is also a church constructed in the same street possibly to facilitate the christian english guests.

Jain Bazaar( Bhavden Da Bazaar) – Most of the inhabitants living in and around this Market were practicing Jains. Most of them were working as jewellers and today also you will find goldsmiths and jewellery shops in this market.

Raj Tilak Road: Rajput Sabha in Purani Mandi use to be adobe of Dev Dynasty Kings and princes. Even after the construction of Mubarak Mandi the coronation ceremony use to happen in the same palace.

Fattu Chowgan: This places is named after a person, who use to cure skin diseases. His name was Fattu.

Talab Khattikan: Leather washing use to happen at this place and the person who use to do it was called as “Khatik”. This is why this place is called as Talab Kahttikan.

Afghan Mohalla: This is a place where people accompanied with queen from Afganistan use to live. Queen from Afganistan use to live in the palace where you find the present day Radio station and this place is called as Begum Mohalla. Masjid near police headquarter was made for the Afghani Begum.

Chand Nagar (Gummat): Chand Rani took refuge in this neighbourhood after migrating from punjab. She was escaping the turmoil in Punjab. A Gurdwara and a home was made for her in Chand Nagar. When she died a tomb was made in her remembrance but it was destroyed by some miscreants.

Resham Ghar: Resham Ghar is a place where sericulture was setup. Today this place is converted into a hospital and helped expand the congested GMC Hospital. This new hospital is currently known as Super Speciality Hospital Government Medical College Jammu.

Jullahka Mohalla: “Jullaha” means weaver and this neighbourhood was mainly of the weavers.

Ustad Mohalla: “Ustad” means master and in this neighbourhood mostly masters of the princes use to live here.

Tange Wali Gali: “Tange” means Horse carts or Bullock carts and Tange Wali Gali was a street where mostly charioteer lived. This was a stand for all the carts which were used for travelling across the city.

Khilone Wali Gali: This street was abode of a toy manufacturer Govind. He use to make toys for festivals.

Talab Tillo: This place was named after an man Tillo Shah who had helped construct a pond for people.

Rihadi Chungi: There use to be a Toll Post and it is named Chungi based on that.

Dalpatian Mohalla: This place is adjacent to Khatikan Talab. Majority of the residents of this neighbourhood were Dalpatian Rajputs.

Slathia Chowgan: Most of the residents in Slathia Chowgan were predominantly from Salathia Rajput community. This is on the north western part of Mubarak Mandi.

Pakki Dakki: This use to be the main route from Mubarak Mandi to river Tawi. Most of the inhabitants living on this route were influential and this was the first route to be made pakka(concrete in those days).

Naiyan Di Dhakki: This is close to Jullahka Mohalla and named mostly because of the shops of barbers. After cutting people use to go to river Tawi for bathing.

Bawe wali Gali: This street is close to Shaheedi Chowk. people use to go to Bawe wali Mata temple situated inside Bahu Fort. Bagh-e-bahu is a beautiful park adjoining Bahu Fort inside which a temple of Deity Kali Mata is located.
